Outdoor vs. Studio Maternity Photos: Which Is Right for You?

When you're deciding how to capture your growing baby bump, one of the biggest questions is where to shoot: a cozy, climate-controlled studio, or somewhere outdoors with natural light and real scenery? Both styles are beautiful in their own way, and the right choice comes down to your personality, your timeline, and the look you're going for. Here's how the two compare, so you can pick what's right for you.
Studio Maternity Sessions: Polished, Controlled, Timeless
A studio session gives us full control over lighting and backdrop, rain or shine. Studio sessions are also easier to schedule tightly around your due date, since there's no sunset window or weather forecast to work around.
Studio sessions can also be easier if there are small children to include in the photos since there are no distractions keeping them from participating in the photoshoot.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions: Natural Light, Real Backdrops
Outdoor sessions bring in golden-hour sunlight, open sky, and a sense of place, whether that's a favorite park, a field of tall grass, or a spot that means something to your family. The natural light creates a softer, more candid feel, and there's more room to move, walk, and include your partner or other children in the shots.
Because outdoor sessions depend on weather and daylight, they typically need to be scheduled a little further out from your due date, with more flexibility for rescheduling if the forecast doesn't cooperate. These also are typically done later in the day when the sun is lower in the sky so we avoid harsh lighting.

Outdoor vs. Studio: How to Choose
There's no wrong answer here — it really comes down to a few things: how comfortable you are with the unpredictability of weather, whether you want a specific location that has meaning to you, how close you are to your due date, and the overall mood you're picturing (soft and romantic vs. bright and natural). Many clients also ask about combining both styles in one session, which is absolutely possible if timing and location allow.
